Recipe: Homemade Dishwasher Tabs as found on BA
Did you know that you can make your very own dishwasher detergent tabs? It’s super easy and when stored in a glass apothecary jar, it becomes a pretty counter top accessory in your kitchen that will leave your friends asking how you made them and if they can have the recipe! Here’s the simple steps:
2 cups baking soda/sodium bicarbonate (cuts grease)
2 cups Borax (natural cleaner/disinfectant)
1/2 cup kosher or epsom salt (helps with hard water)
1/2 cup vinegar (helps bind the ingredients and provides extra cleaning power)
20 drops lemon essential oil (antibacterial, cleaning power, great smell!)
Mix all of the ingredients together working with a wooden spoon (be ready for a little fizzing when the vinegar meets the baking soda!). Be careful when working with the lemon essential oil. It is very strong, so use with caution! Scoop the mixture into two ice cube trays, pressing and packing the mixture firmly into each square. Set the trays in a dry, sunny spot and allow to sit and harden for 24 hours. Once hardened, transfer cubes to container with a lid, such as a glass apothecary jar with cap.
To use, add 1 cube to your dishwasher detergent compartment and splash 1/2 to 1 cup of vinegar into the bottom of the dishwasher (this step is key to avoiding cloudy glassware) and start your machine. That’s it! An easy alternative to store bought detergent tablets.
